Your significant other (SO): Sure. Let me have a look.
Long pause.
SO: Oh man, your system is a mess. Why don’t you just [names a tech solution you’ve never heard of]?
When it comes to tech, ignorance is not bliss. It just means there’s plenty you don’t know but might need to.
That’s specially so with the current rate of change on every platform everywhere. But particularly LinkedIn.
With more than 90 changes on the platform by mid-April 2024, it’s almost impossible to keep up. In fact, if you’re not a regular user you might log in and find the platform is unrecognisable. Nothing is where it was last time, new features have arrived that you know nothing about and ones you’re familiar with have disappeared.
It can make you want to leave and never come back.
In reality, of the many, many changes we’re currently seeing on LinkedIn, only a fraction of them will be of any use or relevance to you.
For instance, if you don’t have a company page or use one in your work, changes to that part of the platform will be of no interest to you.
But anyone with a LinkedIn account does need to know about changes to profiles. Also how to message connections and build a network. All these are important even at the most basic level of usage. After all, LinkedIn is the world’s largest social media platform for business there is. Not everyone may be active but they’ll have a profile. Which means that if you want to reach out to someone in particular, it’s pretty likely that you’ll be able to find them. Up to 3 degrees of separation anyway.
The platform is an excellent place for meeting new business colleagues, getting in touch with those you’ve not heard from in a while and developing new connections.
LinkedIn is the land of opportunity for those who see the possibilities and actively work to turn them into reality. Whether that’s a new job, a new business venture, building a reputation as a thought leader or being invited as a guest on lives and podcasts, LinkedIn is where that can happen.
Naturally, it doesn’t happen overnight or without effort. Nothing worthwhile ever does. But with time, effort and knowledge, it will.
