Why These Myths Matter
Every time you log in to LinkedIn, you’ll see posts repeating outdated advice, myths, or half-truths. That’s why we invited LinkedIn expert Kevin D. Turner to join Link∙Ability’s Lynnaire Johnston and help us cut through the noise about LinkedIn myths. Kevin brought his signature blend of humour, insight, and deep insider knowledge to clarify what’s true, what’s no longer relevant, and what’s just plain wrong.
The Top Myths – Busted
Myth 1: Hashtags Still Drive Reach
Externally, hashtags still play a role in indexing and search engine visibility. But internally, LinkedIn has quietly reduced their power. Follower counts have disappeared, hashtag pages are harder to access, and their impact on post distribution is minimal. That said, using single-word hashtags in newsletters and articles adds them to the URL which improves discoverability.
Myth 2: There’s One LinkedIn Algorithm
This one refuses to die. Kevin explained that there are dozens of algorithms – 19 just for reach – all built by different teams at different times. They evolve independently and even compete with each other. That’s why there’s no single “algorithm update” day. It’s chaos – but intentional chaos.
Myth 3: You Can’t Escape LinkedIn Jail
LinkedIn jail is real, but not always final. Most people end up there due to unapproved automation tools. The key warning sign? Tools that use “fingerprint blocking” to hide themselves – leaving you holding the bag. Kevin’s direct link to get help from LinkedIn if you’ve been locked out is linkedin.com/help/linkedin/
Myth 4: Company Pages Are Pointless
Not true – but they need the right strategy. While profiles tend to outperform pages in engagement, company pages that amplify employee content and share original posts can be powerful. Just don’t expect magic without effort.
Myth 5: Everything on Your Profile Is Indexed
Surprisingly, much of your LinkedIn profile is no longer indexed by Google or AI tools unless users are logged in. Posts, comments, newsletters, and articles are still indexed. Kevin shared a workaround: toggling your public profile off and on again can help trigger reindexing.
Myth 6: AI Tools on LinkedIn Are Worth Using
Kevin didn’t mince words – the built-in AI tools on LinkedIn haven’t improved in over a year. They’re fine for complete beginners, but anyone with an established profile will find them generic at best. Use AI for brainstorming, not publishing.
LinkedIn in 2025: What to Focus On
Don’t fall for vanity metrics or one-size-fits-all posting rules. Posting less often with more intention – and replying to comments – can outperform daily posting. Prioritise authenticity, interaction, and personal tone. As Kevin put it, “AI makes a great muse, but a terrible artist.”
Final Thoughts
LinkedIn is evolving – and sometimes hiding those changes in plain sight. The key is to stay curious, question assumptions, and build strategy on current facts, not folklore.
